The items offered on this site described as "fair trade" are produced or imported by members of the Fair Trade Federation. Fair trade means equity and fairness for producers and marketers and a living wage for the craftspeople who create the products. It means opportunity for employment and advancement, particularly for the most disadvantaged among us. It means healthy and safe working conditions and environmentally sustainable practices. And it means openness to public accountability. So we are staunch supporters of fair trade. And we work daily to incorporate the ideas of fair trade in our business, striving to maintain honest relationships with our suppliers and customers. We try to minimize waste and pollution with 100% paper packaging that can be and has been recycled. You can take one of our products out of its shipping box and put the box and its padding right in the recycling bin. (Or you can reuse it.) There are no foam peanuts or plastic bags. We minimize miles driven in the course of business by consolidating trips and planning our routes. We are restructuring our shipping rates to encourage the use of less polluting ground transport. And we are beginning to choose supply sources based on their approach to environmental and other social issues. It has been fun growing this business over the past few years. The people we deal with are nice and the products we sell are beautiful. We don't go to work feeling that we are taking advantage of our planet and its people; we go there feeling that we are taking care of them and our customers as well.
